Return to Wonderland

I never thought it would actually happen, but was pleasantly surprised when I found out about American McGee’s plans to bring Alice back to life. Being one of my favorite games, Alice has everything it takes to classify as a good video game: compelling story telling — in fact, the game’s plot is an altered, macabre version of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland — no tedious levels, but funny and cynical dialogs and overall good graphics, all wrapped up in a modified Quake 3 game engine.

Alice 2

The original title was produced by Rogue Entertainment, which later went out of business. This time, however, the game is being developed by Spicy Horse, a Shanghai based game company founded by McGee.

At the moment, not much is known about the sequel, although some concept art and photo footage already appeared on Flickr. I’m particularly fond of this drawing indicating Alice fighting with a horrendous snail. Seriously, I can’t wait. It’s been almost ten years…

The game is expected to be released this year. For this to happen, they are still searching for game artists to drive forth development, so if you hold the qualifications, are fluent in English or Mandarin or both, are willing to relocate to Shanghai, why not have a look at the job descriptions?
